| Mid Coast, Maine |
|
Along length of the Mid Coast you will fine a ragged succession of estuaries, peninsulas, islands and cliffs. This is the area in which the mountains reach the sea, a picturesque combination of forest and sea.
Measured in a direct line, this dramatic coastline is 250 miles long. The countless bays and inlets, carved by the glaciers and sea, make the actual shoreline over 2,500 miles. This ragged coast line helps make this area a yachtsman, sport and commercial fisherman paradise. It's shores has also lured artists for centuries.
Geologists have named this highly unusual shoreline -- The Drowned Coast.
The sailing term "Down East", originates here from the days of sailing vessels. Because New Englands prevailing winds are from the southwest, a schooner could sail from other Atlantic Coast ports to the easterly ports of Maine by running with the wind behind it: downwind to the east.

Thomaston is located only 4 miles from Rockland and 10 miles from Camden. A lot of our guests are pleased to be so close, yet out of the traffic.

In addition to lobster, this area is a home to a dazzling array of sea life, harbor seals, porpoises and minke whales. A little further north you will find the, always exciting, Atlantic Puffin.
This area is also known for it's abundance of blueberries. More than 40 million pounds are harvested annually. These berries are grown wild. If you are in the area in early August, you'll see the large patches of blueberries. No better time to stop in for a taste.
You cannot leave this area without a visit to the Northeast's lone national park, Acadia National Park. One of the highlights is Cadillac Mountain. At 1,530 feet, this mountain is the highest point along the eastern seaboard north of Brazil. At the summit, one has a view of hundreds of islands that dot Frenchman Bay.

General Knox |
When you visit Montpelier you will be greeted warmly. You will be guided by people who love this replica of Lucy's and Harry's home and who are dedicated to keeping it in it's original splendor and to keeping the memory and ideals of this great patriot and his family alive. Montpelier was the only home they ever owned.
General Henry Knox is an unsung hero of the Revolutionary War. His intelligence and vision often ignored or barely glossed over by many standard history books - perhaps due in part to a self-effacing nature that was content to put ideas into action without requiring personal aggrandizement. Perhaps his attitude was colored by his working class background, for he was never fully accepted in the Tory society of pre-Revolutionary Boston. He was an inner city child, without formal education, who was destitute at age 9 and worked to support his mother and brother. December of 1775, General George Washington assigned Knox, a 25 year old Bostonian, to be Commander of Artillery. General Knox died unexpectedly in 1806. He was buried in Thomaston.
